The 22nd 24-hour German Championships of the DUV turned out to be a very exciting event. For the first time, the race was held in Rockenhausen, organized by the LG DUV. The 1 175.24 m lap was easy to run and attracted a record field resulting in many great performances delivered. 13 performances beyond the 200km mark demonstrate the high caliber competition. Also, not often before so many teams were finally recorded.
Overall winner was Rene Strosny from Bautzener LV, with 236.518 km. With this, he eventually won by a considerable margin against Mario Reichelt, TSV Wittenburg, with 231.203 km who had been in the lead for most of the time. It has been the first national championship for Rene, who is also a member of the DUV squad, but it did not come as a surprise given his capabilities demonstrated so far. Oliver Ruf (LG DUV) captured third place in his first 24 hours race, missing the 230 km mark just barely. There is more to expect from him given his potential.
Even more absorbing was the women’s race. Gaby Grohmann from Troisdorfer LG M.U.T and defending champion Marika Heinlein from FC Geesdorf really battled it out intensely. Despite a few phases of weakness from both athletes, excellent performances were recorded: Gaby won with 213.537 km and Marika with 210.048 km was runner-up. The bronze medal was also taken by a rookie here. Dorothea Pfeffer from Lauffreunde Bönen had decided to run in Rockenhausen only after her victory in the recent 12-hours race in Basel. In addition to her third place her performance of 200.319 km conquered the critical 200km mark.
Two new German records were achieved in age categories: Sigrid Eichner, 100 Marathon Club, posted a new best in the W70 with 155.690 km, and the current world record holder in the M70, Alfred Schippels from TUS Holtenau, can now claim to be a new German record holder in the M75, with a distance of 170. 804 km.
More comprehensive coverage will be given in the next edition of ULTRAMARATHON.
